Breast enhancement surgery is a cosmetic prosthesis procedure aimed to correct and increase the size of breasts in women. Patients requiring breast augmentation surgery include those who have undergone mastectomy or those who have undeveloped or shrunken breasts due to genetic deformities or as an aspect of male-to-female sex reassignment surgery. Breast augmentation surgery is preferred by women who seek improvement in their physical appearance, mental health, social life, self-esteem and sexual function.
Breast augmentation surgery has been in vogue since 1895. The earliest used implant was Czemy, prepared from the adipose tissue of the same woman. Later, several other substances were tried as implants including ivory, glass ball, ground rubber, cartilage, terylene wool, gutta-percha, Dicora, polyethylene chips, polyester silastic rubber and Teflon-silicone processes.
In today’s context, there are primarily two varieties of breast implants being used for increasing the breast size. While the saline-filled implants have silicone elastomer shell filled with sterile saline liquid, silicone gel implants have a silicone shell filled with viscous silicone gel.
Breast augmentation is a simple surgical procedure where the breast implants are introduced into the body through an incision made either in the infra-mammary fold, or along the areolar border or through an incision made in the armpit. Implants are also introduced through an incision made in the navel and abdomen. The positioning of placing these implants inside breasts depends on the requirement. Different places where implants are placed include subglandular, subfascial, subpectoral and submuscular.
Patients having undergone this surgery might suffer with certain local complications including post-operative bleeding, fluid collection, and infection on the surgical site, pain in the breast, asymmetric appearance and interference with breast feeding. There have been incidences of cancer through usage of breast implants.
